歌川広重 Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858)
Ukiyoe artist of the late Edo period. Studied Kano school under Okajima Rinsai, and also adopted the Shijo school and Western painting methods to form a wide range of painting styles. At first, he painted beauties, portraits of actors, and illustrations. He is best known for his painting "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. Although he gained fame as a landscape painter, he also showed talent in flower-and-bird and hand-painted paintings. Influenced European painters such as Van Gogh.

A richly animated interior scene unfolds across three sheets, revealing the elegant bustle of Yokohama’s pleasure quarter as figures converse, stroll, and pause beside bridges, lanterns, and verandas, all carefully staged within layered architectural spaces that draw the viewer inward; subtle color harmonies and precise linework balance intimacy and spectacle, capturing both refined leisure and everyday movement in a single continuous narrative; created by Utagawa Hiroshige, whose mastery extended beyond landscapes into complex urban and genre scenes, this original ukiyo-e triptych demonstrates his sensitivity to atmosphere and human presence, and the set remains not backed, retaining the immediacy of the original prints.
