Description

正二堂 Shojido 'Rose Flowers' A Pair of Silver Leaf Byobu Two Panels Folding Screen Byobu Room Dividers VA910

with signature 'Shojido' 正二堂 and seal 'Shoji' 正弐

This pair of folding screens presents an elegant composition of rose flowers painted across a softly luminous silver-leaf ground, creating a refined interplay between floral delicacy and atmospheric depth. Gracefully branching stems carry pale yellow blossoms and buds rendered with careful modulation of color and line, while the subtly oxidized silver surface introduces a muted, time-softened brilliance that enhances the sense of quiet sophistication. The grid-like understructure faintly visible beneath the silver leaf adds visual rhythm and spatial order, allowing the flowers to emerge with gentle emphasis rather than overt decoration. The asymmetrical placement across the two panels creates a natural flow and balance, making the screens suitable both as architectural room dividers and as contemplative works of art. Signed “Shojido” with seal “Shoji,” the screens reflect a cultivated sensitivity to botanical subject matter and surface harmony. As is typical for antique byōbu, there are age-related conditions including creases, stains, and areas of damage; these are visible in the listing photographs and should be understood as part of the screens’ material history, contributing to their authenticity and presence rather than detracting from the overall visual grace and understated elegance of the work.
