100 Kannon Pilgrimage (Bando 33, and Chichibu 34) 坂東三十三所, 秩父三十四所 - Kannon Pilgrimage Shokannon 聖観音 (Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva standing) / Japanese Buddhism art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll RD680

Shokannon 聖観音:
Also known as Kannon Bosatsu (Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara), this name was given to the deity because it means that he is always watching people and will save them in the blink of an eye at the sound of a call for help, and was widely worshipped in Japan. It is one of the Six Avalokitesvara Bodhisattvas and is said to save people who are lost on the road to hell.

Kannon Bosatsu figure holding a lotus bud.
The seed of the lotus flower is the Bodhi in our hearts, and Bodhisattva Sage Avalokiteshvara is showing us how to make the bud bloom in order to lead us, who have been covered in afflictions without letting the seed of the heart bloom, towards enlightenment.

The Bando 33 is a series of 33 Buddhist temples in Eastern Japan sacred to Goddess Kannon. Bando is the old name for what is now the Kanto region.

The Chichibu 34 is the collective name for 34 Kannon sacred sites in the Chichibu region of Saitama Prefecture.

As is the case with all such circuits, each location has a rank, and pilgrims believe that visiting them all in order is an act of great religious merit.
