雪村周継 Sesson Shukei (b1504)
Zen monk and painter of the late Muromachi period. The details of his life are unknown, and it is also unclear who he studied painting under directly. Sesson himself wrote in 1542 in his "Setsumon Deishi" a book in which he expounded on his theories of painting, that he admired Sesshu. He also studied Song and Yuan painting and developed his own style. His somewhat rough and sturdy style reflects the temperament of local painters in the Warring States period. Most of his works are Suiboku ink paintings, but there are also some colorful flower-and-bird paintings.
