This charming hanging scroll by Higashihara Hosen (1886–1972) captures a delicate seasonal moment with a lively sparrow perched among green plums, rendered in soft colors and elegant brushwork. The composition balances natural vitality with refined restraint, characteristic of Hosen’s flower-and-bird paintings. The sparrow’s alert posture and the ripening fruit evoke early summer freshness, while the nuanced ink tones and gentle detailing reflect the artist’s training under Takeuchi Seiho and his participation in major exhibitions such as Bunten and Teiten. The scroll bears Hosen’s signature and seal “Hosen” (方僊) and is accompanied by its original tomobako (box). Please note that the scroll has a noticeable mould smell, consistent with age and storage, which may require airing or conservation attention.
