宮西玄性 Miyanishi Genjo (1904-1982) Daitoku-ji Japanese Zen kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / 松風 Shofu with Original Box (Tomobako) RE284

松風 Shofu
The literal meaning is the wind through a pine tree. It is often used as an expression to focus on something in Zen words. In the tea ceremony, the sound of boiling water on the pot is called "Shofu". This word means to focus on the only sound of "Shofu" without deluding by stupid things like dust during when tea ceremony.

宮西玄性 Miyanishi Genjo (1904-1982)
Former abbot of Daitokuji Temple Obai-in.

with signature 'Zen Daitoku Genjo so' 前大徳 玄性 叟 and seal 'Genjo noin' 玄性之印 'Gikei' 義珪

This Zen hanging scroll by Miyanishi Genjo (宮西玄性, 1904–1982)—former abbot of Obai-in, Daitoku-ji—features the bold calligraphy “松風” (Shōfū), meaning “pine wind.” In Zen tradition, this term evokes the subtle sound of wind through pine needles, symbolizing focused awareness and undistracted presence. In the tea ceremony, Shōfū refers to the sound of boiling water in the kettle, encouraging practitioners to center their attention solely on that sound, free from worldly distractions. Signed “Zen Daitoku Genjo sō” (前大徳 玄性 叟) and sealed “Genjo noin” (玄性之印) and “Gikei” (義珪), the scroll embodies the spiritual clarity and aesthetic restraint of Rinzai Zen calligraphy. An original box (tomobako) is included, affirming the work’s authenticity and reverent preservation. This piece offers a contemplative focal point for meditation, tea practice, or interior display, rooted in the refined legacy of Daitoku-ji.
