This scroll comes with an appraisal box by 'Himejima Chikutei' 姫島竹亭 (1895-1945)
姫島竹外 Himejima Chikugai (1840-1928)
Japanese painter of the Meiji and Taisho periods. Formerly a samurai of the Fukuoka domain in Chikuzen. Studied Nanshu painting under 村田東圃 Murata Tohno (1802-1865) and later 石丸春牛 Ishimaru Shungyu (1793-1860). After the Meiji Restoration, he moved to Osaka and became a leading figure in the Osaka Nanga circles. He excelled in Sansui landscapes, flowers and birds, and was particularly good at bamboo groves. Among his students were 水田竹圃 Mizuta Chikuho (1883-1958) and 赤松雲嶺 Akamatsu Unrei (1892-1958).
