中村能久 Nakamura Yoshihisa 京焼 Kyo ware 'Maple and Ginkgo Leaf Patterns Silver-coloured Tea Bowl' with box VA928

中村能久 Nakamura Yoshihisa
is a contemporary Kyoto-based ceramic artist working in the tradition of Kyo-yaki (Kyoto ware, also known as Kiyomizu-yaki). He established his kiln near Tōfuku-ji Temple and has devoted his career to the creation of tea utensils, including matcha bowls, incense containers, and other implements for the tea ceremony. His work is distinguished by seasonal motifs and auspicious designs, often featuring blossoms, birds, and flowing water patterns. Drawing inspiration from classical masters such as Ninsei and Kenzan, Nakamura produces utsushi (reinterpretations) of traditional styles while adding his own contemporary sensibility. Bright polychrome decoration, gold highlights, and refined brushwork characterize his pieces, which are valued both for their practical use in the tea room and for their aesthetic appeal as modern Kyoto ceramics. Nakamura’s tea bowls and utensils are widely appreciated among tea practitioners and collectors, reflecting the enduring vitality of Kyoto’s ceramic tradition in the modern era.

A refined tea bowl (chawan) by Kyoto-based ceramic artist Nakamura Yoshihisa (中村能久), known for his elegant seasonal designs and classical Kyoto ware (Kyo-yaki) techniques. This piece features a shimmering silver-toned glaze adorned with hand-painted motifs of red maple and yellow ginkgo leaves—symbols of autumn’s beauty and transience in Japanese aesthetics. The bowl’s surface is richly decorated with fine brushwork and subtle gold accents, reflecting Nakamura’s mastery of iro-e (polychrome painting) and his sensitivity to seasonal themes. The contrast between the metallic sheen and the warm foliage creates a visually striking yet harmonious composition, ideal for tea gatherings or display. The tea bowl comes with a wooden storage box, suitable for protection and presentation. A graceful and culturally resonant piece for collectors of Japanese ceramics, tea utensils, and seasonal art.
