1900~1988. Yamada Mumon was a Rinzai school roshi, calligrapher, and former abbot of Shofuku-ji in Kobe, Japan. Mumon was also the former head of the Myoshin-ji branch of the Rinzai school of Japan. His most prominent student (and Dharma heir) is Harada Shodo of Sogen-ji, an influential master in both Japan and the United States.

To return to one's hometown with nothing at hand.
It is based on the story of Dogen who went to the Song Dynasty and met Zen Master Nyojyo, and returned home after realizing that enlightenment is to know every time something is taken for granted and that there is no other exceptional Buddhism to be realized.
