与謝蕪村 Yosa Buson (1716-1784) Japanese antique art kakejiku kakemono wall hanging scroll / Suiboku Ink Plum Tree with Box RE322

与謝蕪村 Yosa Buson (1716-1784)
Haiku poet and painter of the mid-Edo period. Yosa Buson is famous as one of the three great masters of haikai (Haiku poets) in the Edo period, along with 松尾芭蕉 Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) and 小林一茶 Kobayashi Issa (1763-1828). Born into a farming family, he lost his parents when he was a teenager and set out for Edo (now Tokyo) at the age of 20. In Edo, he learned haikai from 早野巴人 Hayano Hajin (1676-1742). After his master's death, he traveled around Kanto and Oshu, and then moved to Kyoto. His haikai style is full of realism, romance, and lyricism, and he became a central figure in the haikai circles of the middle age. He is also an excellent painter, and along with 池大雅 Ike no Taiga (1723-1776), is considered a great master of literati painting.

with signature 'Choko' 長庚 and seal 'Sanka koji' 三果居士 'Tosei' 東成

A masterful ink painting of a blossoming plum tree rendered in suiboku style, this hanging scroll by Yosa Buson (1716–1784) exemplifies the poetic depth and literati elegance for which he is celebrated. The gnarled trunk and delicate blossoms are executed with expressive brushwork and tonal subtlety, evoking both the resilience of winter and the quiet anticipation of spring. Above the signature appears the inscription “擬 呉文仲”, indicating Buson’s respectful emulation of the Chinese painter Wu Wen-zhong, whose style he admired and adapted—an homage that reflects Buson’s deep engagement with Chinese literati traditions. Signed “Chōko” (長庚) and sealed “Sanka Koji” (三果居士) and “Tosei” (東成), the scroll bears Buson’s mature artistic identity, blending haikai sensibility with painterly lyricism. As one of the three great haiku masters of the Edo period—alongside Matsuo Bashō and Kobayashi Issa—Buson’s visual art shares the same realism, romance, and seasonal nuance that define his poetry. This work, accompanied by a box, stands as a rare and refined example of mid-Edo literati painting, where brush, verse, and reverence for tradition converge in quiet brilliance.
