Painter of Kyoto in the late Edo period. Founder of the Hara school. His birth family were doctors, but when Zaichu became a painter, the Hara family turned painting into a family business. He is noted for his precise decorative style, a fusion of the Tosa, Maruyama-Shijo, and Kishi-ha schools. He excelled at portraits.
Age: 1796 Spring February (Lunar calendar) / 寛政丙辰 春 二月
with signature 'Hara Chien' 原致遠 and seal 'Hara Chien in' 原致遠印 'Shiju' 子重
